DEXA Scan

Overview

DEXA Scan (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) is a non-invasive test used to measure bone mineral density (BMD). This test helps determine the risk of osteoporosis, a condition characterized by weak, brittle bones that can increase the risk of fractures.

CONDITIONS DIAGNOSED VIA DEXA SCAN

The following steps are commonly included in a DEXA scan procedure:

  • Preparation: You’ll be asked to change into a comfortable gown or robe. Remove any metal objects, such as jewelry or hair clips, as these can interfere with the scan.
  • Positioning: You’ll lie on a padded table, positioned either on your back or side, depending on the specific type of DEXA scan being performed.
  • Scanning: The DEXA machine will slowly move over your body, emitting low-dose X-rays. The machine will capture images of your bones from various angles. The entire scan usually takes only a few minutes.
  • Review: After the scan is complete, a radiologist will analyze the images and provide you with your results. The results will typically include a T-score, which compares your bone density to that of a young, healthy adult. Based on your T-score, the radiologist will determine your risk of osteoporosis and provide recommendations for further action.

Conditions DEXA Scan can detect

Accuracy: DEXA scans provide highly accurate measurements of bone mineral density, allowing for precise assessment of osteoporosis risk.
  • Non-invasive: The procedure is painless and does not involve any injections or radiation exposure.
  • Quick: A DEXA scan typically takes only a few minutes to complete.
  • Reliable: DEXA scans are considered a reliable and standardized method for measuring bone density.
  • Early detection: Regular DEXA scans can help detect osteoporosis or osteopenia early, allowing for timely intervention and prevention of fractures.
  • Treatment monitoring: DEXA scans can be used to monitor the effectiveness of osteoporosis treatments and assess the need for adjustments.
  • Risk assessment: DEXA scans can help identify individuals at high risk for osteoporosis based on their bone density and other risk factors.
